Pieter Devos Announces the Retirement of Espoir
It can be announced today that the talented 17 year old show jumper Espoir will retire from the sport. Under World Number 6 and top ranked Belgian rider Pieter Devos, Espoir has achieved multiple CSI5* career wins and podiums at the highest level of the sport, notably winning the likes of the Bordeaux World Cup (2018), the AL SHAQAB Grand Prix of Doha (2019), Rotterdam’s Nations Cup (2018), the Oslo Grand Prix (2016), riding a double clear at the Gothenburg European Championship (2017) and winning the Belgian Championship (2016).

Pieter commented: “After an incredible career my team and I have made the decision to retire Espoir at the age of 17; fit, happy and healthy.
He has been my lifetime partner, a horse who has taught me so much. One with the biggest heart, and the one who has proven that if you listen - truly listen - believe, and work together, you can achieve unimaginable things. I hope you can find the time to watch this film about him, he truly deserves to be celebrated as the special horse he is and I believe can remind us all why we love our horses so much.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of this special horse’s story - from his breeders, and riders before me, to Bart Vandecasteele his co-owner, Simon Rousic his long-time groom, our partners and the whole team behind the scenes at Devos Stables who have and will continue to care for and love him always.
But most of all I would like to thank Espoir - he is the horse who changed my life and who gave me the confidence to believe we could achieve great things together.”
Espoir (Surcouf De Revel x Perle D’or) was born in 2004 and came to Pieter’s stable in 2015 where the pair built a formidable partnership. As well as featuring as an anchor for the Belgian team and mainstay for multiple Nations Cups, Espoir has featured and contributed to many Global Champions League team competitions, helping secure podiums in Mexico City, Valkenswaard, New York, Miami Beach, Paris, Madrid and St Tropez. As well this, he achieved many individual Grand Prix placings and podiums throughout his illustrious career, ranking as one of the top horses in the world and earning over 1 million euros in prize money.
Espoir will be retired at the Devos Stables home in Belgium, where he will continue to live with Pieter and enjoy a quieter life of hacking and well deserved field time. For further information about Espoir, please click here.

Pieter Devos kondigt afscheid van Espoir aan.
Het 17-jarig springpaard Espoir neemt afscheid van de sport. Onder het zadel van ’s werelds nummer 6 en de hoogst geplaatste Belg op de wereldranking, heeft Espoir verschillende overwinningen en podium plaatsen behaald op het hoogte niveau van de sport. In het bijzonder won hij de Wereldbeker van Bordeaux (2018), de Grand Prix van Al Shaqab in Doha (2019), de Nations Coup van Rotterdam (2016) en de Grand Prix van Oslo (2016) en op het Europees Kampioenschap in Gothenburg (2017) schonk Espoir het Belgische team 2 foutloze rondes in de Landenwedstrijd.

Pieter Devos: “Na een fantastische carrière hebben mijn team en ik besloten om Espoir terug te trekken uit de sport op de gezegende leeftijd van 17 jaar, fit, gezond en gelukkig.
Hij is een levenspartner voor mij, die me ontzettend veel geleerd heeft. Hij heeft het grootste hart en heeft me geleerd dat als je echt naar je paard luistert, samenwerkt en in elkaar gelooft, je ongelofelijke dingen kan verwezenlijken. Ik hoop dat je de tijd kan nemen om de video te bekijken, hij verdient het om gevierd te worden als het bijzondere paard dat hij is en ik geloof dat de video er ons allemaal kan aan herinneren waarom we zo intens van onze paarden houden.
Graag wil ik van de gelegenheid gebruik maken om iedereen te bedanken die een rol heeft gespeeld in het verhaal van dit speciale paard - van zijn fokkers, de ruiters die hem voor mij onder het zadel hadden tot Bart Vandecasteele zijn mede-eigenaar, Simon Rousic zijn groom en verzorger van al die jaren, onze partners en het ganse team van Devos Stables dat hem achter de schermen met bijzondere zorg en liefde hebben omringd en die dat ook in de toekomst zullen blijven doen.
Maar in het bijzonder wil ik Espoir bedanken - hij is het paard dat mijn leven heeft veranderd en die me het vertrouwen gaf om te durven geloven en grote doelen te stellen.”
Espoir (Surcouf de Revel x Laudanum xx) werd geboren in 2004 en kwam bij Pieter Devos terecht in 2015 waarna ze een geweldig duo werden. Naast een steunpilaar en vaste waarde in de Belgische ploeg voor Nations Cups, heeft Espoir ook een grote rol gespeeld in de Global Champions League waar hij podium plaatsen wist te behalen in Mexico City, Valkenswaard, New York, Miami Beach, Parijs, Madrid en St. Tropez. Bovendien wist hij tijdens zijn illustere carrière ook in talloze Grote Prijzen podium- en ereplaatsen te behalen waardoor hij tot de beste paarden ter wereld behoorde en meer dan 1 miljoen euro aan prijzengeld wist te winnen.
